Understanding Jigs & Fixtures in Manufacturing

SLN Precision Works 6 April 2026 5 min read

What separates a jig from a fixture, and how good tooling design directly reduces cycle time and rejection.

Jig or fixture?

A jig locates the work and guides the cutting tool, typically for drilling. A fixture locates and holds the work while the machine controls the tool path. Both exist to make position repeatable without operator judgement.

Design principles

Locate on machined surfaces, restrain degrees of freedom deliberately, clamp away from thin sections to avoid distortion, and make loading fast and obvious so the operator cannot fit the part incorrectly.

Return on tooling

Tooling cost is recovered through reduced setup time, lower scrap and consistent output across shifts and operators.
