Cylindrical grinding is how shafts, spindles and pins reach final size, roundness and surface finish after machining and heat treatment.
The finishing operation that sets size
Cylindrical grinding removes small amounts of material with an abrasive wheel to bring a rotating component to its final diameter. Because stock removal is small and controlled, it delivers accuracy and finish that turning cannot economically reach.
After heat treatment
Hardened components distort. Grinding is performed after heat treatment to correct that distortion and restore concentricity between diameters, which is critical for bearing fits and running accuracy.
What to specify
Give the ground diameter with tolerance, the surface finish requirement, and any concentricity or runout callouts relative to a datum. These three items decide the grinding setup.
