Repeatability against flexibility
CNC turning executes a stored program, so the hundredth component matches the first within a narrow band. Conventional turning depends on the operator reading dials and taking cuts, which makes it slower but very flexible for single pieces.
In a working job shop both have a place: CNC for batch work with controlled tolerances, conventional lathes for one-off jobs, rework and simple support operations.
Cost logic
CNC carries programming and setup cost that is amortised over quantity. Below a handful of pieces, a conventional lathe is often the cheaper and faster route. Above that, CNC almost always wins on cost per piece and on consistency.
Choosing per component
Decide by tolerance, quantity and geometry complexity. Multiple diameters, profiles, grooves and threads on one part favour CNC; a plain spacer in quantity two does not.
